THE Chronicle is saddened to hear of the passing of well known and popular local historian Mr Peter Thompson.

Peter was a good friend to the Chronicle, having contributed many articles and quotes over the years.

He had been ill for some time and his brother Barry revealed the news on social media earlier today (Saturday August 2) that Peter had passed

Barry said: “Folks Peter passed away last night , thanks to everyone who has been praying and inquiring about him, we will put up funeral arrangements later

Remember the happy times and the good that he done for others , there’s one word that has been used so much by so many over the past while when people talked about Peter and that word is “ gentleman “ and that is what is was a gentleman, a friend and to me a big brother , His battle is over, be thankful for each day God grants us!”

Peter was indeed a gentleman and I had discussions about local history and ordinary things too many times to remember over the years.

His immense passion for local and particularly Dervock history came across strongly and his knowledge in his own interest areas was second to none, with professionally historians holding him in the highest regard.

Tributes are already pouring in on his popular Dervock History Social Media Group and other threads.

There will be more on Peter's life and passing in Tuesday's paper.

Rest in Peace Peter.
